The events of Sept. 11, 2001 provide a window into how America is governed from behind the scenes, in ways which have become increasingly clear in the intervening eighteen years. Voters on both the left and right of the American political divide expressed their dissatisfaction with the status quo during the 2016 Presidential elections. The media were unable to report on, or interpret, this dissatisfaction because they are complicit, along with both political parties and other essential institutions, in defending discredited narratives about our recent history and current events.
Nothing so succinctly summarizes the false narrative propagated since 9/11 than the American wars on Afghanistan and Iraq. The American War on Terror – sparked by the "New Pearl Harbor" desired by some – has lasted eighteen years despite recognition, early on, that the attacks on both countries were based on false “intelligence” (e.g., “propaganda”). As a Brown University report details, hundreds of thousands of people have died directly of the violence, and far more as an indirect result of the wars’ destruction of infrastructure. Millions have been displaced from their homes indefinitely, bringing discord to host nations receiving them as refugees. The United States has squandered trillions of dollars to fight the post-9/11 wars, and exempted itself from international law. At home and in the conflict zones, the wars have eroded civil liberties and human rights.
The U. S. has been indelibly stained by torturing terror suspects and indefinite detentions without trial.
These wars have cemented a complacency about the effect of such waste and destruction in the American psyche – and their embrace by our leaders has fostered a culture of violence and apathy. Abroad, they have led to under-reported advances in Russian military technology and Eurasian solidarity that foretell accelerated erosion of America’s military and economic pre-eminence.
As former Army colonel and professor emeritus Andrew Bacevich writes: “(A)ll these years later, the underlying premises of U.S. policy and the forever wars that go with it remain very much intact – the massive military budget, the military-industrial complex, the empire of bases, the preference for coercion rather than diplomacy, with "all options" always "on the table."… When it comes to war, we are a nation of addicts unaware of our addiction ...”
We must ask ourselves: How could such disastrous policies have been pursued for nearly eighteen years without any corrective action by our political system based on alleged checks and balances?
9/11 Truth Action Project
9/11 TAP is an effort to build a non-partisan democratic movement to create the conditions in which the “ninety-nine percent” can have their needs addressed by their government. The War on Terror, like the wars that preceded it and those that will likely follow, is a major reason for our soaring national debt and the diversion of tax revenues and governmental attention away from domestic needs and the pursuit of world peace.
9/11 TAP differs from other antiwar organizations in that it applies the insights gained from scrutiny of the events that have been used to facilitate wars waged over the last few generations, notably the Kennedy assassinations, the Gulf of Tonkin incident and the events of 9/11/2001. In all three cases, major media joined with government to hide information on the falsity of the stories fed to the public, paving the path to war. The allegations that Oswald acted alone, the decades-long cover-up of President Kennedy’s tragic struggles with his advisors to avert wars with Russia and Vietnam, and the pathetic 9/11 Commission Report have all been discredited – and yet live on in the pages of our vaunted free press. In all three cases, psychological operations (false flag attacks, fake news from compromised reporters, dismissal of “conspiracy theorists”) were in ploy to smother public awareness of the connections to the military industrial complex that President Eisenhower warned us against in January 1961.
The Lawyers Committee for 9/11 Inquiry
Recently, The Lawyers Committee for 9/11 Inquiry presented to the U. S. Attorney in Manhattan “dispositive” evidence of explosives pre-planted at the World Trade Center. The presence of highly engineered nanothermite in the ashes, as well as the use of anthrax from a military chemical warfare laboratory in the attack on the Senate immediately after 9/11[6, 7] (both of which went un-investigated by the 9/11 Commission) point to a military role in those false flag events as well. In all three cases, psychological operations (false flag attacks, fake news from compromised reporters, dismissal of “conspiracy theorists”) were a ploy to smother public awareness of these connections.
The lessons from these cases for contemporary protest are profound:
- The public remains prey to the corruption of the mass media – specifically, their abuse of their 1st Amendment privileges to curry favor with big business and big government. In doing so, they continue a history of such behavior documented over a century ago by great American reporters like Mark Twain and Upton Sinclair[9, 10]. Therefore, efforts to heed President Eisenhower’s warning cannot rely on antiquated gestures such as letter-writing campaigns or street demonstrations whose success depend upon mass media coverage.
- The public is not informed about the history and repeated use of psychological warfare, and of mass surveillance by the CIA and military intelligence to topple regimes overseas, nor of the ease with which these techniques – including the employment of journalists as agents – can be, and apparently have been, imported to fight “subversive” (i. e., dissenting) activists and journalists at home. Therefore, bringing about widespread awareness of the omnipresence of domestic psychological warfare is essential.
- The ties between the Military-Industrial Complex, Congress and other departments of the Executive Branch, have only been strengthened in the intervening sixty years since Eisenhower's speech. Therefore, even the election of a reform-minded president in no way guarantees his or her ability to deliver on promises affecting this powerful constituency; political activists must recognize that something deeper is needed.
As Eisenhower well knew, the alliance between large industries and government, with a subservient media, was characteristic of the nation he helped defeat in World War II. Today, our system may differ in degree, but not for long if we remain indifferent to the erosion of constitutional rights, checks and balances.
A Civic Reawakening
Based on this post-9/11 reading of events, 9/11 TAP proposes that America needs a civic reawakening based on grassroots Truth Action Groups (TAGs), organized nationally in a bottom-up democratic structure. TAGs must serve as support groups, educators about psychological operations and hidden history, and partners of other grassroots organizations with overlapping goals. At the national level, 9/11 TAP can contribute to the ascendancy of Truth-friendly media – writers who are already at work, connecting dots, but who are being cut off from access to the larger public by new forms of censorship.
And finally, despite its nonpolitical nature, 9/11 TAP can aid independent efforts to bring new strategies, and a new narrative of American history and destiny into the political arena.
